Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To provide an understanding of the nature of employment relations in Ireland, both as a practical activity and as an academic subject To be aware of the historical evolution of Irish employment relations To analyse key concepts in the study of employment relations To scrutinize the development of key actors in Irish employment relations To providing an understanding of the structure, role and operation of dispute resolution institutions To consider the governance of trade unions

Syllabus:

The study of industrial and employee relations Employment/industrial relations in context Industrial relations perspectives: systems theory, pluralism, unitarism, Marxism The historical origin of Irish industrial relations and the development of trade unions. The reasons why people join unions The types, structure and functions of trade unions in Ireland. Contemporary issues facing trade unions The types, structure and functions of employer organisations in Ireland. Contemporary issues facing employer organisations The institutional framework within which employment relations is conducted The nature of industrial conflict Labour standards Workplace partnership and other developments Contemporary issues in employment relations in Ireland.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

1. Define the key terms in the area of Industrial Relations. 2. Outline the importance of internal and external context that affect Industrial Relations. 3. Describe the main characteristics and the historical evolution of IR in Ireland. 4. Develop a fundamental knowledge of employment legislation in Ireland. 5. Apply the basic concepts used to study IR. 6. Differentiate between the various industrial dispute resolution mechanisms used in Ireland
