Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To provide an overview of the human resource management and development process and how effective policies and practices can contribute to improved organisational effectiveness
To differentiate the respective roles of Line Managers and Human Resource Management specialists in applying human resource management policies and Practices
To recognise the need for human resource management and development practices to be integrated vertically to business strategies and horizontally to the human resource management practices
To comprehend the importance of performance management as a linkage between corporate strategies and individual performance
To identify and integrate the underpinning of effective performance management practices with motivational theories
To explore how assessment centres, psychometric testing, work sampling tests can strengthen selection methods
To understand the role of grievance and disciplinary procedures in ma
Syllabus:
Overview of the human resource management process; Role and responsibilities of top management, line management and specialist human resource practitioners in the development and implementation of HRM policies and practices aligned to business strategies; Best practice HRM policies and practices; Human resource planning; Performance management and performance appraisal; Recruitment and selection methods; Assessment and development centres; Grievance and disciplinary procedures; Identification of training and development needs; Design of training sessions; Evaluation of training and development programmes
Learning Outcomes:

To appreciate the range of human resource management activities and how they link into the business planning process; Differentiate the different roles of top management, line management and human resource specialist in the development and implementation of human resource management and development policies and procedures; To diagnose weaknesses in existing selection procedures and determine ways to strengthen the process by utilising a range of techniques designed to improve predictive validity; To plan, prepare and conduct performance appraisal, grievance and disciplinary interviews; To explore the scope for improving the selection process by the use of psychometric testing, assessment centres, work sampling tests, and criteria and behavioural questioning techniques; Apply grievance and disciplinary procedures; To differentiate performance management and performance appraisal and recognise how performance management links to business planning; To apply cost benefit analysis techniques to training and development programmes

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Participants will complete guided reading on key concepts and theories in advance of the workshop. Practical exercises will be completed on analysing training needs, preparing training sessions, evaluating training and development, setting performance targets and writing behavioural anchored rating scales, and conducting grievance and disciplinary interviews.
