Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of the module is to deliver a grounding in the main Human Resource Development theories, concepts, and issues. It is intended as an introduction to theory and practice of Human Resource Development in an organizational context. This module will provide principles of developing people, focusing on individual learning, the importance of creating and maintaining a positive learning/e-learning environment, and the practical knowledge and skills required for the planning, delivery, and evaluation of an activity or session at work. The module also highlights the importance of digital transformation on the HRD function.

Syllabus:

The syllabus covers core topics surrounding the organizational process of development at work. In doing so, the purpose of human resource development is discussed, and definitional aspects are reviewed. Here, various terms are defined: Training, Development, Education, Learning, Employee Development, Human Resource Process. Issues surrounding individual learning are discussed: individual learning in organizations, adult learning, learning styles, and reflection on learning styles. Critical stages in devising and delivering effective learning and development activities are reviewed, including understanding learning and creating an environment conducive to learning, planning and delivering a learning and development activity to individuals and groups, and evaluating and reflecting on learning and development activities. The impact of developments in e-learning and virtual learning environments.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Describe the key concepts and theories associated with Human Resource Development Differentiate between individual learning styles, analyze and evaluate their own learning styles, and make recommendations for change. Effectively employ digital technologies to plan, conduct and review a training activity for individuals and groups. Apply the HRD process to create an environment conducive to learning/e-learning Discuss contemporary issues relating to HRD.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Creatively deal with challenges that arise when working in the HRD function. Acknowledge the importance and challenges of digitalization to the HRD process.
