Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Getting the initial stage of the employee lifecycle right is essential. This means hiring the right people for the right roles and onboarding them correctly. If students, as HR practitioners can fully engage in this stage correctly, it is likely to reduce problems at later stages of the cycle such as in regards to performance. The central objective of this module is to promote the understanding of the initial stage of the employee lifecycle. The use of artificial intelligence, and technology in general, has been increasing in recruitment and selection. It will be necessary that students as people managers are aware of the technologies being employed and understand their advantages as well as their limitations. The module aims to develop fundamental skills applicable to this recruitment and selection of employees, with a focus of increasing knowledge of the role of digitalisation in attracting and selecting employees.

Syllabus:

Employer brand; the role of technology and AI in recruitment, selection and onboarding; recruitment - recruitment strategy, job description, job design; selection - the selection interview, scoring matrices; other selection methods; reliability and validity; legislation and recruitment and selection; the importance of onboarding.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the initial stage of the employee lifecycle and the role of digitalisation at this stage Identify and critically evaluate various technologies used for recruitment, selection and onboarding activities Identify appropriate recruitment and selection methods for different organisational contexts. Confidently exhibit knowledge on the preparation for and conduction of selection interviews.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Engage in self-reflection demonstrating personal learning, strengths, barriers and how the knowledge, skills and competencies developed in the module can be used in a wider context Appreciate the importance of respecting and valuing diversity and equality in the workplace, in particular, at the attracting and selecting stage of the employee life cycle.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Exhibit key communication skills, particularly when engaging with prospective employees through technology including email and video calling.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be a blend of both asynchronous lectures and in-person workshops. Guest lecturers by practitioners will be incorporated where appropriate. Workshops held either live or virtually will enable students to engage with the essential skills for employee resourcing.
