Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The professional body for HR in Ireland and the UK, the CIPD, has centred its mission for HR practitioner roles on creating better work and working lives. A sustainability-oriented approach to human resource management (HRM) is increasingly expected as the standard approach to managing people in organisations contributing to both economic and social governance aims. The purpose of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to effectively design and implement people management processes compatible with the achievement of organisational aims and the creation of sustainable working environments.

Syllabus:

This module explores emerging and topical themes and issues in the field of HRM. The module draws on theoretical perspectives from strategic HRM, evidence based management, HR analytics and green HR. The module will cover content relating to changing labour market dynamics and organisational design; the role of technology in the design and management of work; contemporary approaches to recruitment and selection; new approaches to managing performance including gamification and algorithmic management; engaging and rewarding employees in ways compatible with the achievement of sustainable work; retaining and developing talent; employee wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Critically discuss the role of HRM in the development of sustainable organisations and sustainable work. 2. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the relationship between HRM, the deployment of new technologies and the development of human capital in organisations 3. Demonstrate and critique the linkages between HRM, strategy and organisational performance in the manage of people in increasingly complex and changing business environments 4. Collate, analyse and interpret information from a variety of sources, including academic research publications in an evaluative manner in assessing the impact of contemporary HR issues.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 5. Discuss the importance of ethical decision making in designing and implementing HR policies and practices. 6. Demonstrate collaboration skills in participating in group activities designed for both learning and assessment.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be taught through lectures, problem-based learning sessions and applied case studies. An active learning approach will be taken in guiding students in the development of knowledge and analytical skills required to diagnosis and resolve complex issues in HRM. This approach is designed to support students with independent learning and also to learn within a social environment to gain skills to understand and implement effective HRM practices that support the development of sustainable work and organisations. The UL graduate attributes of "responsible", "articulate", and "curious" will be delivered upon through a combination of participation in class discussion at lectures, peer learning, individual and group projects, sustainability mapping & upskilling, and personal self-reflection.
