Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of this module is to provide participants with a deep contextual understanding of responsible leadership and decision-making in contemporary organisations. Emerging from stakeholder theory, and partly in response to the global crisis of trust in leadership, responsible leadership represents a value-based form of leadership or mind-set. It recognises accountability to multiple stakeholders in making strategic decisions and a responsibility to create value not only for the organisation but also for employees, customers, communities and society more broadly. Responsible leadership does not occur in a vacuum, however. Rather, it is contingent on critical aspects of the context within which leaders act and make decisions and in particular to changes in global society, climate change and new responsibility demands emerging from, among others, UN sustainability goals. Modern leaders are increasingly required to step outside of their traditional roles and habitual behaviours to operate effectively in this changing landscape. This module offers participants the opportunity to assess and develop their leadership skills as decision-makers within their own organisational context as they navigate crisis, shape culture and lead sustainable change.

Syllabus:

Leadership within the changing landscape of the global business environment including environmental, economic, social, ethical and sustainability trends; understanding responsible leadership from a behavioural perspective including transformational leadership, authenticity and values-driven leadership, persuasion and influence to effect change; perspectives on decision making including systems thinking, stakeholder theory, ethical principles, corporate social responsibility and accountability; responsible leadership and sustainable decision-making in practice.
