Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The rationale and purpose of this module is to develop students' knowledge, skills, and values relating to the provision, design and construction of housing in a global, national and local context. The module will contribute to the students' ability to teach the Leaving Certificate subject Construction Studies. The students' will have an opportunity to examine their existing knowledge, skills and values of the field of study and construct a deeper knowledge of their subject, while exploring their values and developing their skills. The students will be provided with opportunities to explore the interaction of their personal beliefs and their professional responsibilities as teachers of Construction Studies. This module will build on Construction Technology 1 and complement Construction Technology 3 providing the student with an opportunity to broaden and deepen their competencies.

Syllabus:

Designing and construction of sustainable housing for comfort and energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact across the life cycle. International and national building design standards and practices. Pedagogical content knowledge, skills, values and attitudes appropriate to the teaching the Leaving Certificate subject Construction Studies.  

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: generate responsive housing design solutions that reflect a deep knowledge of energy efficient, minimal environmental impact, design concepts, standards and practices, generate and communicate a coherent personal construct of how global, national and local issues and policies contribute to the provision, design and construction of energy efficient, low environmental impact, housing, generate and communicate housing design solutions to a standard that reflects local, national and international standards and best practice.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: organise newly developing values and attitudes in relation to existing values and attitudes, demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of the issues that pertain to housing provision and design, embrace their responsibility to teach these concepts at second level, participate actively in learning activities (e.g. discussions).

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: communicate and evaluate building designs through the use of drawings, sketches and models (manual, physical and electronic).

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

A social constructivist educational philosophy will shape the learning experiences. Students will be encouraged to actively engage in a series of collaborative subject centred learning experiences. Core knowledge will be communicated through the lectures. Tutorials will allow for a deeper, interactive engagement with the subject content. Laboratory classes will provide active learning experiences that facilitate student collaboration and the construction of understanding and development of values and skills. The pedagogical strategy adopted in the module contributes to the development of the graduate attributes, providing the student opportunities to grow as a knowledgeable, creative and collaborative adult.
