Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This course examines the various practices of conflict resolution and cooperation that exist within international relations and within international organisations and looks at the interactions and negotiations between various actors at different levels of international politics.

Syllabus:

Introduction: theoretical and methodological approaches; International institutions: functions, practices, decision-making; Diplomacy: traditional, bilateral, multilateral; the United Nations system; the European Union; Current issues.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Understand the functions and practices within the different levels of diplomacy within International Politics. Understand the different forms and workings of international institutions. Gain a knowledge of the decision-making processes involved within the UN and the EU. Critically assess the nature of diplomacy and negotiation in international relations. Critically assess the nature of decision-making within international institutions.
