Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module builds on existing knowledge of anatomy, physiology and core clinical modules of physiotherapy. It considers the principles of exercise and physical activity, the physiological impact of exercise and physical activity and a diverse range of psychological and social factors that impact upon activity and participation. This module will use an experiential learning model that centres on patient case studies. This module will be delivered through a combination of teaching and learning strategies including lectures, tutorials, practical classes, small group work and self-directed independent learning. Students will be encouraged throughout the module to be proactive about their learning and facilitated in achieving this. The total hours scheduled for this module is 78 hours over 12 weeks. This module was formerly delivered as Exercise and Physical Activity (PR4081) to just BSc Programme. Module name has changed to MSc Title to which it is co-scheduled and has also increased credits from 6 - 9.

Syllabus:

Topics covered within this module will include: Principles of exercise and physical activity assessment, prescription and health promotion; physiological impact of exercise on multiple body systems (e.g. cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological, endocrine, renal, immune); exercise assessment and prescription (e.g. aerobic, anaerobic, mobility, flexibility, resistance (strength, power), endurance, balance and proprioception); land and water based exercise; group and individual programmes; recommendations/guidelines for exercise and physical activity; subjective and objective assessment of exercise capacity; facilitators and barriers to participation in exercise and physical activity (e.g. chronicity of disease/illness, attitudes, beliefs, socio-economic status, role of family, society); behavioural change and motivational techniques(e.g. motivational interviewing).

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Understand the physiological impact of exercise on multiple body systems. Understand the physiological principles underpinning exercise and physical activity in general and sporting populations. Evaluate guidelines and common outcome measures used to determine the effectiveness of exercise and physical activity within physiotherapy. Discuss the importance of viewing health and illness within a person's social context Apply knowledge of psychological and sociological factors that shape health behaviours and outcomes

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Acknowledge the role and scope of practice of the physiotherapist and other members of the MDT and community in the promotion of exercise and physical activity. Integrate into practice the differing health and participation needs of different community groups. Respond to the internal and societal barriers to partaking in exercise and physical activity in the design and delivery of programmes. Demonstrate appropriate communication and professional skills to effectively promote exercise and physical activity (including motivational techniques, behavioural modifications).

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Display competence and safety in the design, implementation and evaluation of exercise and physical activity programmes.
