Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module builds on the previous Foundations of Physiotherapy modules by exploring more complex case studies. These will involve several systems and increasingly complex environmental and personal factors and psychosocial issues that must be considered in order to optimally manage the case presented.. The total hours scheduled will be 132 (based on 3 lecture, 4 lab and 4 tutorial per student per week over 12 weeks) but scheduled over 6 weeks

Syllabus:

This module will consider the physiotherapy management of people with multisystem conditions including life changing diagnoses and terminal illness. In addition to considering the role of the physiotherapist in recovery and repair it will consider our role in providing assistive technology solutions for augmenting independence and quality of life. The psychosocial aspects of care will form a large component of this module along with ethical considerations in end of life care.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Synthesise and apply the knowledge on normal and abnormal tissue healing and repair to a range of multi-systems cases Discuss the role of physiotherapy in management of complex multi-system cases Appraise and synthesise the evidence for physiotherapy magement of complex cases Debate end of life ethical issues and their impact on practice

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

Demonstrate an appreciation the complex interaction of personal and environmental factors involved in physiotherapy management of complex health conditions Resolve conflicting issues between personal beliefs, ethical considerations and cultural influences on healthcare

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

Utilise the relevant outcome measures to evaluate the effect of physiotherapy intervention at the level of body functions, activities and participation Demonstrate appropriate physiotherapy interventions to manage the cases provided

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will use an experiential based learning model that centres on patient case studies. Each case study will use a blended learning approach to the relevant domains of body structures and functions, activity limitations, participation restrictions, personal and environmental factors and the specific physiotherapy skills needed to manage these multi-systems cases. Students will have a range of learning experiences including face to face and online content, staff and self-directed learning and group and individual work.
