Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of psychological concepts and explore how these concepts relate to health within nursing and midwifery practice.

Syllabus:

An introduction to psychological theory, which includes developmental psychology throughout the life span, behavioural psychology, principles of sensation, perception, cognition, consciousness, emotion, motivation and personality, health psychology, stress management, coping and foundations of biological psychology, psychological impact of illness and hospitalisation and an introduction to the main categories of abnormal behaviour.

1. Describe how psychology is applied in healthcare settings 2. Identify how developmental psychology impacts on aspects of the lifespan. 3. Apply psychological principles to improve healthcare practice

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Accept that psychology has a place in healthcare practice 2. Discuss the relevancy of psychology to healthcare 3. Defend the application of psychology in the healthcare context

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The teaching style will be interactive and enquiry focussed. The student will participate in via e-learning online lectures. The learning experience will be through a variety of teaching and learning strategies: in particular the engagement in lectures, tutorials and workshops Students will also be expected to engage in self-directed study on the issues raised in class to supplement their learning. Students will become knowledgeable about the importance of psychology and be able to articulate how it may impact on the experience of contact with the health care services. Students will be expected to demonstrate an awareness of how research findings impact on the provision of care in health setting. These experiences will help with the development of knowledge, articulation, collaboration, proactive and responsibility via interactions, assessment and content learning.
