Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will introduce students to a range of fundamental theoretical perspectives and issues in general psychology through examining their relevance in everyday life. Through exploring everyday issues students will not only learn about theoretical perspectives but will also gain a basic knowledge of how psychology may be applied.

Syllabus:

Through exploring some key studies in psychology, students will gain a basic understanding of the main investigative techniques used by psychologists. The range of topics will include; definitions of psychology; language and cognition; personality; social interaction; emotion; brain and behavior; health and illness; human development; psychological problems; learning; applications of psychology

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Lectures will provide the theoretical background and main methodological approaches to the topics listed in the syllabus. In addition, each week students are given a paper to read. These readings keep students informed about recent research findings. Students will also attend tutorials that focus on skills and group work. The weekly readings help develop the graduate attributes independent, knowledgeable and inquisitive. The tutorials will help develop attributes related to inter-personal skills and being collaborative.
