Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is the second part of a two-module sequence. The aim of this module is to teach advanced analysis and statistics for experimental and non-experimental methods.

Syllabus:

This module builds on 'Advanced Analysis 1'. Psychology makes use of many different statistical methods. Researchers need to decide which method is most appropriate to examine particular research questions. In order to make these decisions, researchers have to know the pros and cons of particular statistical analyses. Therefore, this module examines the underlying rationale, benefits, and problems of a variety of advanced statistical methods. The statistical techniques taught include profile analysis, structural equation modelling, and meta-analysis.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate a recognition of the underlying rationale of particular advanced statistical methods of analysis. Assess which particular research question and available data call for particular methods of analysis, and which research questions and data sets call for alternative methods of analysis. Choose particular methods of analysis for particular research and the available data. Defend the choice of particular methods of analysis.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate confidence in assessing and applying advanced methods of analysis. Demonstrate an appreciation of what the advanced methods in psychology have to offer for the psychological research process.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Online lectures will provide overviews to and explanations of advanced statistical methods. Online lab session will be designed to demonstrate how the methods can be used and to discuss the usefulness of methods. Online lectures and labs will aid students in their development of the Graduate Attributes of Curious and Agile. Besides this in-depth practical component, this module is writing intensive. Students will have to submit written assignments, in which they explain the rationale of particular statistical and qualitative methods and their appropriateness for examining particular research questions and the available data. The assessment approaches will focus on developing the Graduate Attributes of Articulate and Responsible.
