Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of the module is to give an effective and functional overview of Quality Management. It will: 1. Introduce the student to the basic concepts of Quality Management; 2. Inform the student about the role that quality plays in the workplace and impact that quality has on the organisation as a whole; 3. Make the student aware of the how to implement a range of quality strategies and tools.

Syllabus:

1. What is Quality and why is it important; 2. Quality Control / Assurance; 3. Quality Management Systems, 4. Development of Total Quality Management; 5. Continuous Improvement; 6. Documentation, Audits, Standards (ISO9000:2000); 7. Human Resource issues, 8. Quality Tools and techniques: Quality Function Deployment, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Statistical Process Control, Six Sigma; Benchmarking

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On completion of this module students will be able to: 1. Discuss the importance of quality within the workplace. 2. Describe the development of TQM and the differences between QC, QA and TQM. 3. Explain the role of QMS, and demonstrate how to develop a QMS 4. Provide an overview of the ISO9000 series of standards. 5. Recognise the importance of HR management within quality. 6. Demonstrate the ability to apply quality tools and techniques including; QFD, FMEA, SPC, Six Sigma and Benchmarking
