Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is designed to provide a strategic understanding of the supply chain, enabling students to appreciate the supply chain phenomenon. This module: - Defines operations management theoretically and practically. - Identifies the links between operation management and supply chain management. - Emphasises systems thinking and process management as the foundation of supply chain management. - Examines the role of Design, Planning, Control and Improvement in supply chain design.

Syllabus:

Process Thinking: Supply Chain Management's Foundations: Operations Management, Performance & Strategy. Design: New Product Development Process and the Order Fulfilment Process. Planning & Control: The Nature of Planning & Control, Capacity, Inventory, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) Quality Management and Process Improvement. Supply Chain Management: Concept, Activities and Risks.

Upon completion of this module a student will be able to: Define Operation Management and identify how operations management contributes to the organisation success. Discuss how operations management supports the development and execution of a winning competitive strategy. Describe the operations management activities of Planning & Control, Capacity, Inventory, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) Quality Management and Process Improvement from a supply chain perspective

Upon completion of this module a student will be able to: Identify the issues key elements of operations management and articulate their primary function within an organisation. Adopt a stance on the critical issues involved in operation management activities. Appreciate the role of operations management has in the success of an organisation.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be delivered in a blended learning format, with an initial workshop followed by online support and concept development leading into the application of the material in a case study.
