Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
To introduce the student to a further range of manufacturing and fabrication processes and the relationship between materials and processes.
To emphasise the importance of accuracy and precision.
Syllabus:
Engineering measurement.
Length standards.
Standard measuring temperature.
Process Capability.
Quality and Accuracy.
Machining - further consideration of sawing, turning, milling, drilling.
Fundamental treatment of the shear plane - relation between the rake angle and the shear plane and implications for power requirements.
Workholding - methods of clamping, magnetic workholding, chucks and collets.
Welding techniques including : manual metal arc, oxy-acetylene, MAGS and TAGS welding.
Brazing, soldering and adhesive bonding.
Mechanical joining.
Joint design.
Introduction to engineering materials and their properties.
Learning Outcomes:

1. Exhibit a basic knowledge and experience of the methods employed in the processing and fabrication of common engineering materials.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of Process Capability, Quality and Accuracy.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of measurement and inspection upon which the successful application of these concepts relies.
4. Identify the fundamental principles underpinning modern manufacturing.
5. Apply the fundamental concepts and practices of assembly drawings
6. Use modern engineering practices in a range of functions.
7. Exhibit a strong sense of the importance of safety in the engineering environment
8. Demonstrate an understanding of joining techniques and joint design
9. Define the various properties of materials.
10. Explain how these properties can be measured.
11. Perform basic materials selection for process and design applications.

1. Demonstrate correct safety procedures when working with machines and tools in the work shop
2. Use modern engineering practices in a range of functions.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
1. Manufacture simple projects using a range of machinery, including lathe, milling machine, drill press and a range of hand tools.
