Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Students will acquire the skill to identify essential issues in the application of cultural psychology to everyday situations which will provide them with a critical and contextualized understanding of the human mind and behaviour. They will acquire knowledge of advanced cultural concepts, theories, research and methods in order to develop an in-depth appreciation of the field. They will also be able to competently and critically evaluate the theoretical and empirical status-of-the-art.

Syllabus:

The module covers key concepts, theories and topics from cultural psychology, as follows: 1. The human mind and behaviour from a cultural perspective 2. Cultural theories in comparison 3. Culture, cognition and the self 4. Macro- vs. micro cultural psychology 5. Morality and contemporary challenges in the consideration of cultural differences 6. Cultural competence through intercultural trainings

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - demonstrate in-depth knowledge about theories and the state-of-the art in cultural psychology - critically evaluate theories and empirical research in cultural psychology - demonstrate an understanding the difference between macro- and micro cultural psychology and the possible fallacies in cross-cultural research - apply principles of cultural psychology to analyze everyday phenomena and intercultural experiences - communicate clearly and appropriately about cultural issues orally and in written format - design and implement an intercultural training

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will acquire the skill to identify essential issues in the application of cultural psychology to everyday situations which will provide them with a critical and contextualized understanding of the human mind and behaviour. They will acquire knowledge of advanced cultural concepts, theories, research and methods in order to develop an in-depth appreciation of the field. They will also be able to competently and critically evaluate the theoretical and empirical status-of-the-art. This course will use a mix of the following teaching methodologies: 1) Lectures made most efficient through mobilizing pre-knowledge and active student participation 2) Class discussions 3) Role play Assessments are ongoing in various pieces of coursework. The following teaching methodologies relate to the learning outcomes of this course: 1) Lectures: students will be exposed to the theories and state-of-the-art in Cultural Psychology 2) Class discussions: active student participation in class will stimulate students¿ ability to communicate clearly and critically about cultural issues and to establish links between theory, research and real life issues 3) Cultural simulations and role play: being actively engaged in cultural simulations and role plays will enhance the students¿ cultural sensitivity and perspective taking and improve their skills to implement intercultural training methods in practice 4) Assessments involve the analysis of critical incidents in intercultural interactions, students will train their ability to analyze, interpret and communicate intercultural incidents using a theory driven approach, become more sensitive to cultural issues and be trained to become 'cultural observers¿
