Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Diversification of the workforce has been a political objective but also an historical fact and it will be in the future. Recent approaches to this topic take into account underlying processes and contextual moderators of diversity effects and point to the important role of mindsets, leadership and organizational climate. This course provides students with a systematic overview of the state-of-the-art of research on the role of diversity at work.

Syllabus:

The module covers the following areas in the analysis of diversity in the context of work: 1. Historical context of diversification of workforce 2. Dimensions and typologies of diversity in organizations 3. Main approaches to processes involved in diversity effects on work group performance 4. Managing diversity

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Distinguish between different types of diversity and diversity management practices at organizations - Identify diversity related opportunities and challenges at work - Outline the most important theoretical approaches and results to explain diversity effects, including the role of leadership - Apply these approaches to concrete practical cases - Critically reflect on research and organizational policies regarding diversity.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - manifest sensitivity to diversity - apply intercultural sensitivity when dealing with diversity in the context of work

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This course is organized in theoretical/practical lessons. Students will be encouraged to discuss real-life questions of diversity in task related contexts. Examples will be used to illustrate the main theoretical principles. Theoretical approaches and distinctions will be introduced in mini-lectures by the teacher and small groups of students. Selective readings will support the understanding of the theoretical, methodological and practical implications of the learned concepts. Evaluations contain individual and group work. Overall, the module can be characterised as follows: 1) Expositive, for presentation of theoretical frame 2) Participative, with analysis and performing of practical exercises 3) Active, with individual and group assignments 4) Self-study, related with students' autonomous work Self-study includes bibliography search and reading; practical exercises; methodology review and construction for work analysis; to perform the written report and oral presentation preparation
