Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module teaches students how to perform qualitative analyses, in particular an in-depth understanding of content analysis, as well as the software of NVivo. In addition to learning the method, students also learn how to assess critically publications that use content analysis and how to produce a scientific description of content analysis for publication purposes.

Syllabus:

the module is structured in 4 parts, and will cover the following topics: 1. Content analysis 1.1. Definition and main steps 1.2. Potential and limitations 1.3. Practical exercises 2. Software that support coding and analysis of qualitative data 2.1. Introduction, potential, and applications. 2.2. Exercises with NVivo 3. Quality criteria in qualitative research 4. Writing and presenting results of qualitative research

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - Describe the main steps, potential, and limitations of content analysis. - Analyze qualitative data by using content analysis techniques. - Identify the main functions of NVivo, a qualitative data analysis software. - Organize, manage, and code qualitative data, using NVivo. - Identify quality criteria in qualitative research and apply such criteria in the critical appraisal of scientific publications. - Produce scientific documents that describe the analysis of qualitative data.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Theoretical-pratical lessons will include oral lectures, practical exercises in groups (including use of NVivo), and discussion of articles. For a total of 125 hours of autonomous work, students should spend 40h working on the individual assignment, 30h working on the group assignment, and 45h on reading and preparing for classes. Teaching methods are aligned with evaluation methods and both are consistent with learning goals.
