Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The goal of the module is to enable students to collect empirical evidence for the purpose of qualitative research and to apply various qualitative analysis methods in psychological research. Lectures and seminars offer a combination of theories that provide the foundation for qualitative methods and practical exercises in qualitative analyses of empirical material.

Syllabus:

This module offers students a hands-on approach to qualitative research methods in psychology. The module will focus on generating and working with qualitative data, and it will include work on a range of methodological approaches. The module aims to inform students' thinking towards the thesis proposal. The module covers the following topics: 1. interviews and focus groups- as means of qualitative data collection 2. ethics of qualitative research and sensitive research 3. interpretation of qualitative research 4. data coding and analysis 5. epistemological principles for qualitative research 6. interpretative phenomenological analysis 7. discourse analysis 8. thematic analysis 9. strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: 1. Formulate research questions that may be addressed using qualitative methods 2. Demonstrate their ability to plan an approach to producing qualitative data 3. Work with qualitative data 4. Analyze qualitative data 5. Demonstrate an understanding of criteria for quality in qualitative research 6. Identify and recognize the research-ethical considerations in qualitative research

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The teaching will be given through seminars and lectures. There will be 10 hours of lectures, and 8 hours of seminars. Compulsory activities consist of: 80% participation in lectures, seminars are voluntary. Evaluations are through individual coursework.
