Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

For an adequate understanding of cross-cultural influences on human behaviour and of how research and everyday life are impacted by cultural differences, an in-depth understanding of intercultural competence is essential. This module focuses on the explanatory theoretical models of intercultural competence development, on how intercultural communication is affected by cultural differences. The module also covers the analysis and discussion of critical incidents which occur in intercultural interactions, and presents students with opportunities to develop their own skills in intercultural competence.

Syllabus:

The module covers both theoretical models and applications of intercultural competence. It is structured in 5 main topics, as follows: 1. Models of intercultural competence development 2. Cross-cultural differences in verbal and non-verbal communication 3. Analyzing critical incidents in intercultural encounters 4. Training of intercultural competence

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - identify and recall key concepts and theoretical models in the domain of intercultural competence development - apply their knowledge to analyze and better understand differences in social behavior - develop his/her own creative solutions for specific/complex psychological situations in a multicultural context - display awareness about their own cultural background and the cultural and psychological biases they may commit when interacting with people from other cultures

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students will integrate abstract principles and theoretical knowledge in order to discuss concrete examples in reference to adaptation processes (e.g., their own). 1) Lecture for the presentation of theoretical frameworks 2) Practical exercises and discussion in classroom 3) Essay and diary assignments The course is organized in theoretical and practical classes with a focus on the latter, using different teaching methodologies: lectures, practical exercises and group discussions in the classroom. Evaluation is done in individual coursework.
