Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The aim of this module is to enable learners to explore the leadership skills and abilities needed to teach outdoor adventure and water-based activities. At Junior Cycle Physical Education (JCPE), JC Short Course Physical Education outdoor adventure and water based curriculum and Senior Cycle Physical Education Framework. It is essential in outdoor adventure and water based settings to be able to work collaboratively and opportunities will be given to demonstrate confidence, competence and the creativity to work in individual and a team-oriented environment. Learners will be expected to develop their own skills to work collaboratively in preparing and delivering this content. There will be a focus on both the "science" of good teaching and leadership (delivery of information, planning lessons/events, making decisions, and dealing with conflict) as well as the "art" of teaching and leadership (developing trust, communicating with sensitivity, finding the learners niche within a team of leaders, and inspiring those that will be lead). Learners will become skilled at determining risk, both physical and emotional of participants, in all physical activity situations and developing appropriate safety measures to deal with them while providing a fun environment that provides participants opportunities to learn and grow. It will also identify how technology assists in delivery a safe and effective curriculum.
Syllabus:
Students will learn through practical based labs and lectures. It is designed to provide the learners with content so that they can teach in post-primary schools in a safe, inclusive and meaningful way.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Articulate an understanding of adventure education philosophy to include risk, challenge, problem solving, cooperation, and trust. (Creative and Reflective Practice)
• Analyse outdoor, adventure and water-based skills to provide critical and accurate learning cues and feedback.
• Become familiar with the syllabi of Adventure and water-based activities for Junior Cycle students in second level schools.
• Apply knowledge of school protocols and legislation on outdoor adventure and water based activities to safe and effective planning.
Recognise the fundamental aspects of the identified curricular model.
• Identify the unique aspects of off-site teaching.
• Build a broad knowledge base of activities and the ability to improvise and adapt them to diverse populations

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Demonstrate responsible social and personal behaviour in physical activity, including respect for self and others. (Global Citizenship)
• Consider different environmental features when participating in adventure activities including landscape features, tide and weather variations (Global Citizenship)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Practice appropriate safety practices throughout all activities.
• Effectively and efficiently demonstrate selected outdoor adventure and adventure and water based activity skills
• Use digital resources as part of developing pupils' technological literacy. (Digital Skills)
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The module will emphasise the Adventure Education Curriculum Model through a combination of lectures, laboratory, offsite days and private study. It is anticipated that the theoretical and practical aspects of the module content will enable the learning outcomes to be met. Experiential learning in the laboratories will be supported by online resources, lectures, literature, Post Primary Physical Education curricula (Junior Cycle, Senior Cycle and Leaving Certificate in Physical Education. TA blended learning approach to pedagogy will be informed by current research in physical education and online, digital and mediated learning opportunities in outdoor education and water-based activities.

Student as Researcher:
In order to be better prepared for leading an outdoor adventure and water based activities strand in school. Students will evaluate and assess outdoor adventure centres. This will improve their data collection skills which is essential for research.
