Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The aim of this module is to introduce student to the principles and practices of teaching physical education in the Junior Cycle curriculum, the physical education short course and Wellbeing Guidelines. The module provides students with opportunities to consider the meaning and purpose of post primary physical education, examine teaching, learning and assessment in physical education, and develop a range of lesson designing and delivery skills needed for 2nd year school placement. The module will introduce generic teaching and managerial strategies which are linked to student learning and the design of an inclusive physical education learning environment.
Syllabus:
The module will examine selected aspects of pedagogy in teaching physical education and relevant Céim core elements including:
- Effective managerial skills and behaviours including safety concerns, specific to physical education. -Instructional skills and behaviours for physical education.
- Teaching strategies to foster an inclusive learning environment including the use of different physical education appropriate learning platforms.
- Physical Education content development.
- Assessment for and of learning in physical education including in classroom based assessment (CBAs).
- The use of Subject Learning and Assessment Review (SLAR) meetings to enable teachers to collectively reach consistency in judgement of students work in physical education
- Planning for and assessing literacy and numeracy in physical education.
- The use of digital technologies and resources to plan and deliver physical education units of learning and lesson plans.
Furthermore, students will be supported to enhance their own literacy specific to physical education by providing opportunities to identify, create and communicate using verbal and written materials.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Develop dispositions to reflect on the teaching and learning process in physical education
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Plan for meaningful and effective learning activities including using relevant digital technologies and resources
2. Deliver aspects of the Junior Cycle Physical Education curriculum to peers
3. Monitor, assess and reflect on teaching performances
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Through laboratory, tutorial and and private study it is anticipated that the theoretical and practical aspects of the module content will enable the learning outcomes to be met. Experiential and theoretical learning in the laboratories and tutorials will be supported by online resources, literature, Post Primary Physical Education curricula (Junior Cycle) through peer group teaching and learning, practice physical education activities, blended learning, modelling physical education teaching and learning methods, small and large group activities, discussion.

Recent developments and research findings are foundational to the learning outcomes and content of the module. Up-to-date research reports and policy documents will be included to enhance the learning experience of students, for example, Syllabi for Junior Cycle Physical Education, Junior Cycle Wellbeing Guidelines and NCCA assessment and reporting guidelines.
