Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Module PY5021 Evidence based practice is a mandatory requirement for the post graduate certificates and MSc in Advanced Healthcare Practice offered by the School of Allied Health. The module equips students with the skills and knowledge to adopt evidence based practice (EBP). High quality service provision requires that the most current relevant research is combined with experiential learning and service users' preferences. This module will enable students to source and critically appraise the research, reflect on their practice and synthesise this knowledge to address service requirements. The students will also gain an understanding of the barriers and facilitators in implementing EBP in the workplace.

Syllabus:

Introductory day on campus to ensure students are able to access and use electronic resources. Series of keynote topics delivered on-line and supported by a discussion forum, group work and tutorials on the different facets of EBP; defining a service question, searching for and appraising the most current literature, integration and synthesis of information to address service needs and the implementation in practice. Evaluation of changes in work practices.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On completion of this module, students will be able to: Understand the EBP process. source and critically appraise research literature and to synthesise this new material with experiential learning from the workplace in line with service user requirements. Develop a strategy to introduce and evaluate changes in work practice in response to evidence of efficacy.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On completion of this module, students will be able to: Appreciate the differing priorities and perspectives of research and the workplace and of the service users. Present and defend a workplace initiative based on EBP.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Lectures supported by complementary tutorials and workshops in which the student can start to apply and discuss how theory applies to practice. Facilitated peer group learning and teaching.
