Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module presents students with the opportunity to study in depth a chosen topic related to their practice and complete an agreed assignment. The process will involve regular meetings with a member of the academic staff who will act as a facilitator. The chosen subject area can relate to a students proposed masters thesis but must be distinct from the thesis.

Syllabus:

Each student taking an ILM module will 1. Devise, in consultation with a member of staff, agreed learning outcomes and assessment in the format of a learning agreement 2. Conduct appropriate independent enquiry using appropriate resources 3. Present final version of research to an agreed deadline

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On completion of the module, students will be able to: 1. Negotiate, plan and carry out a programme of learning and assessment in a relevant subject area. 2. Demonstrate appropriate detailed breadth and depth of knowledge in a specialised area relevant to the programme of study. 3. Demonstrate initiative and independence in problem solving and be able to critically evaluate appropriate texts and develop effective arguments. 4. Critically justify and rigorously apply appropriate methods and techniques, incorporating an ethical dimension where appropriate. 5. Work autonomously with minimum guidance to manage material, research tasks and writing. 6. Communicate the above knowledge, skills and understanding coherently and effectively both orally and in writing.
