Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to a wide range of communication and feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing profiles within the speech and language therapy scope of practice. Students will focus on the diversity of populations across the lifespan and how children, young people, adults and older people experience and interact with the world around them. The module introduces students to the core features and presentations of diverse populations. The curriculum content reflects the expanding role of speech and language therapy professionals.

Syllabus:

Speech and language therapists scope of practice is wide and speech and language therapists work with a wide range of populations in clinical practice. The learning in this module is foundational and provides a basis for future learning. Content includes: Introduction to a range of communication and eating, drinking and swallowing profiles across the lifespan which fall within the SLT scope of practice; Relevant features of a diverse range of populations, and; Communication and eating drinking and swallowing features, needs and preferences within a range of populations.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Outline key features of populations within the SLT scope of practice, including communication and swallowing. Define different profiles of speech, language and communication profiles in childhood and adolescence. Compare different profiles of speech, language and communication in adulthood. Evaluate the speech, language and communication profile of case examples across the lifespan.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Recognise and respect the heterogeneous nature of populations within the SLT scope of practice. Reflect on and challenge own assumptions about the populations within the scope of SLT practice.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be taught using a combination of lecture and enquiry/problem based learning strategies to support agile learning (graduate attributes: agile, curious, articulate). Students will be supported to seek out knowledge on various communication and FEDS profiles, collaborate with their peers and articulate their findings to the group (graduate attributes: curious, agile, articulate).The range of learning resources will be updated yearly to reflect recent research, clinical guidelines, professional body position statements and developments in this area.
