Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of this module is to provide opportunities for students to observe and meet experienced clinicians in clinical practice settings. The focus in this first practice education module is to develop core boservation skills. Learning will be provided initally through weekly lectures/tutorials focusing on active observation skills and their application to clinical practice. Students will be then be provided with opportunities to engage in supported video observations in the classroom as well as active observation in a clinical setting.

Syllabus:

This module will develop students observation skills as relevant to speech and language therapy practice. Content includes: Observation skills theory and practice; Observation through simulation; Observation in the clinic setting; Data gathering during observation; Communication skills for observation, and; Reflective practice for observation.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Organise observational data using a standard template which will include observations about the environment, people and activities. Conduct an interview with a practicing speech and language therapist to learn about the key aspects of their role and service setting. Analyze the speech and language therapy practice within which they have carried out their observations

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate a respectful attitude during clinic observations and tutorials. Reflect on their experience observing a speech and language therapist in practice .

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Practice observation and personal communication skills in a clinic setting.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module is a practical learning opportunity where student learning is experiential and there is a mixture of observations, class-based discussions and online learning (graduate attributes: articulate, agile, responsible, curious). Curiosity is particualrly developed through opportunities to interview and observe a practicing SLT. Student's have opportunities to become more articulate through practice of communication skills in tutorials and on site visits. Texts and resources provided to students will be updated yearly to reflect recent research and developments in the relevant areas.
