Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this practice education module is to provide learning opportunities that permit the student to gain insight into the experiences of individuals living with speech, language and communication needs. The learning opportunities simulate conversations and interactions across children and adults with speech, language and communication needs. The experience of interacting with adults who experience barriers to communication allows the students to develop an empathetic understanding of what it is like to live with a communication disability, and to learn methods to support conversations. This module also provides learning opportunities that permit the student to observe and simulate pre-novice clinical skills typically used with a pediatric population. This is a core practice education module in the student learning journey to gaining a professional qualification as a speech and language therapist.

Syllabus:

The module provides learning opportunities that permit the student to gain insight into the experiences of individuals living with speech, language and communication needs. Content includes: Rationale and evidence-base in relation to communication partner training and simulation-based learning; Methods and techniques for supporting communication, paediatric assessment and intervention; Reflective models and frameworks for speech and language therapy practice, and; Application of reflective models in supporting people with communication needs.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Explain the ways in which conversation breakdowns can occur when engaging in conversations with individuals with communication disabilities. Identify information that influences student's own communication skills in a supported and simulated clinical environment.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Respect communications in a range of conversational and simulation activities. Empathise with the challenges that people with communication disabilities experience in daily life. Reflect on own role in the process of supportive and simulated conversations and interactions.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate pre-novice clinical skills in a simulated learning environment

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students attend weekly labs for simulation-based learning across the semester. This will include observation opportunities, pre-briefs, de-briefs and simulation of pre-novice clinical skills (graduate attribute: curious and agile). Students also attend tutorials to develop skills and knowledge in relation to supporting conversations during the initial weeks (graduate attributes: curious). Later in the semester, students are introduced to their communication partner who they will meet with weekly thereafter. Students have the opportunity to work creatively to develop resources to support conversation with their partner (graduate attribute: agile). Students engage in self-directed preparations for their supported conversations each week (graduate attribute: responsible). Texts and resources provided to students will be updated yearly to reflect recent research and developments in the relevant areas and guidance by regulatory bodies.
