Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

Hearing and Voice are core components of speech and language therapy clinical practice. This module provides students with an essential theoretical understanding of Deaf language and culture, as well as approaches to assessing, rehabilitating, and managing disorders of hearing and voice across populations and settings.

Syllabus:

Voice and Hearing are essential elements of speech and language therapy practice. Content includes: Disorders of voice and hearing across the lifespan (including theory, organic and functional aetiologies, trans and gender-diverse populations and disorders secondary to cancer); Assessment, instrumentation, differential diagnosis and management of voice and hearing (including psychological approaches to support the voice change process, self-efficacy, confidence, and the transfer of skills into social situations, and; Deaf culture, communication and identity.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Discuss the role of the speech and language therapist in relation to the assessment and management of voice and hearing needs. Evalaute case data to classify a range of voice and hearing needs. Design management plans that are underpinned by principles of person-centred care for individuals with range of voice and hearing needs.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Respect and value Deaf culture, identity, preferences and communication. Demostrate an appreciation of the role of voice in effective communication. Value the use and status of signed languages such as Irish Sign Language.

This module is delivered in a structured and interactive format. Students attend a mixture of lectures, tutorials and labs, and engage in private study and online learning resources (graduate attributes: agile, responsible, articulate). Curiosity and agility are further developed through opportunities to explore diverse issues in relation to normal and disordered voice and hearing and to challenge their own values and attitudes in relation to the professional role in contemporary hearing and issues voice (graduate attributes: responsible, curious, agile). Learning is scaffolded through opportunities for peer-to-peer discussion (graduate attribute: articulate), instrumental laboratory workshops and practical sessions, self-directed learning through web-based content including professional guidelines, contemporary international and national policies, texts and further learning resources (graduate attribute: curiosity), all updated yearly to reflect recent research and developments in this area.
