Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module aims to provide students with a broad understanding across domains of linguistics, including morphosyntax, phonetics and phonology, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, semantics, and sociolinguistics. Students will engage with how these concepts are related and integrated within a developing and developed communication system. They will be introduced to examples of the application of these concepts in speech and language therapy practice. Students will learn about the perception and production of speech, the theoretical concepts of descriptive linguistics in relation to phonetics and phonology. They will develop competence in phonetic transcription using the Intenrational Phonetic Alphabet system up to a single word level and gain introductory skills in language analysis.

Syllabus:

The practice of speech and language therapy requires a multifaceted knowledge of linguistics and phonetics. Content includes: Introduction to the key components of the domain of linguistics and their application to speech and language therapy practice; General principles of phonetic description and analysis, including outline of speech production mechanisms, the larynx in speech, consonant classification (English and non-English), vowel classification (English and non-English) and air stream mechanisms; Introduction to principles of phonology, including: the use of sounds to make linguistic contrasts (phonemes), non-contrastive variation of sounds depending on context (allophones) and types of transcription (-etic and -emic); Morphology, grammatical morphemes, inflectional and derivational morphology; Word classes; Introduction to syntax; Sentence meaning and structure (propositions, predicates and arguments, thematic relations, sentence constituents and syntactic functions).

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Discriminate between a phonetic and a phonological account of a language. Describe the structure and function of the vocal tract. Explain the process of speech perception. Identify and give examples of the application of linguistic domains to speech and language therapy practice. Apply knowledge of morphosyntax, sentence structure and meaning to analysis of child and adult language samples

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate proficiency in using IPA symbols to transcribe normal and disordered speech at the single word level.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Students attend weekly lectures and tutorials. The module is built on a structured, interactive delivery approach, that includes prior engagement in pre-recorded and/or signposted materials on core linguistic and phonetic concepts followed by in person classes and tutorials. The latter involve a mixture of direct instruction and applied description and transcription analyses. The teaching and learning approaches afford students opportunities to apply their developing knowledge to child and adult communication samples and settings.
