Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their competence and independence in conducting advanced sociological research. Further, the goal is to give students the opportunity to demonstrate that they have developed the capacities to critically reflect on the research process.

Syllabus:

Within this module, students will actively conduct research and will report and discuss the research that they have undertaken. We expect students to build upon the knowledge and skills regarding sociological theory and empirical work, research design, methods of analysis, and professional skills that they acquired in the various programme modules. Students will select an research area that aligns with their own interests and develop their own research questions and strategies. Faculty members individually assigned to the students will assist in their process. This module is specifically designed for the summer of year 1 of the two year programme.

Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Identify where a contribution to sociological science is needed  Develop a research idea and a research plan  Defend their research questions and approach   Discuss the value of their research and findings    Demonstrate awareness of strategies to enhance the positive contributions, personal and social, of empirical research

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:    Demonstrate an awareness of the role of sociological research in everyday life   Demonstrate an appreciation of the ethical issues around doing research on social issues

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module includes that students actively conduct research. Although students need to demonstrate independence in their abilities and activities, they will be assisted by faculty throughout the research process.
