Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

To provide a framework within which students begin to design their dissertation research

Syllabus:

How to choose and elaborate an appropriate and feasible research question; how to identify appropriate methods; how to incorporate theory in empirical research; how to plan and timetable research including the use of GANTT diagrams; how to write a proposal; issues of sampling, access, and ethics

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Identify a feasible and appropriate research question related to the various topic areas covered in the programme electives. Identify appropriate methods Write a persuasive proposal Identify issues of access and sampling of suitable cases Anticipate and deal with issues of research ethics

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: Demonstrate an awareness of the role of research in social life Demonstrate an appreciation of the ethical issues around researching social experiences.

The module will combine six lectures in combination with in-class discussion.  In combination, these will facilitate the development of knowledgeability, proactivity, articulateness, creativity, collaboration skills, and responsibility.
