Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is set at A2+/B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Consolidation of the structures, functions and vocabulary taught in the first year and expands grammatical competence to include use of the subjunctive. Development of knowledge of contemporary Spain and Latin American cultures and societies, with a particular focus on the most salient socio-cultural/political issues of contemporary Spain and Latin America.

Syllabus:

This syllabus is set at A2+/B1 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Lecture: further develop the knowledge-base of Spain and Latin America developed in first year and examines some of the salient socio-cultural/political issues of contemporary Spain and Latin America. Tutorials and lab: Working with set textbook, complementary audio-visual and online material, as well as intermediate difficulty literary texts.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: - arrange and generate information from non-specialist spoken and written texts related to Spanish-speaking communities. - construct more complex descriptions and narratives relating to a broader range of topics.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: - justify opinions about topical issues related to Spanish-speaking cultures. - plan and monitor own strategies for effective long-term language learning.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The course consists of six hours of Spanish per week: - Four language tutorials (grammar, vocabulary, communication skills). - One laboratory class (communication and listening skills). - One lecture on contemporary Spain and Latin America. All these hours combine the further development of linguistic and cultural knowledge relating to Spain and Latin America. Students will be engaged in active learning both inside and outside the classroom and will be encouraged to develop autonomous learning strategies.
