Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is set at B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Consolidation of the structures, functions and vocabulary taught in the first and second years and expands grammatical competence to include complex use of the subjunctive. Further development of knowledge of contemporary Spain and Latin American cultures and societies, with a particular focus on the interaction between Spain, Europe and the wider world.

Syllabus:

This syllabus is set at B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Tutorials: Working with set textbook, complementary audio-visual material, as well as advanced literary texts.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: * Express a further understanding and command of Spanish grammar, vocabulary and usage. * Apply acquired language skills orally in a fluent and accurate manner. * Develop further reading and analytical skills by means of exposure to a variety of texts. * Identify complex issues in translation and have the ability to translate a variety of text types from Spanish into English and vice versa. * Demonstrate an awareness of issues of central relevance in contemporary Spain and Latin America. * Examine and criticize selected Hispanic literary texts.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: * justify advanced opinions about topical issues related to Spanish-speaking cultures. * further plan and monitor their own strategies for effective long-term language learning.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: * demonstrate advanced linguistic and cultural awareness in the completion of communicative tasks. * communicate effectively in most situations. * further develop their pronunciation

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The course consists of four hours of Spanish per week: * Four language tutorials (grammar, vocabulary, communication skills). All these hours combine the further development of linguistic and cultural knowledge relating to Spain and Latin America. Students will be engaged in active learning both inside and outside the classroom and will be encouraged to develop autonomous learning strategies.
