EXERCISE IS MEDICINE - DISEASE PREVENTION
Year Last Offered:
2025/6
Hours Per Week:
Grading Type:

Prerequisite Modules:
Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module brings together the knowledge gained in the last three years of the course to investigate aspects of exercise and health. These include sport performance, lifestyle and general well being. Included in this module are examples of how exercise may be used prospectively to improve the quality of life and also as an adjunct therapy to clinical medicine in the treatment of life-threatening disease. Underpinning this content is the field of physical activity science and exposure which explores physical activity behaviour determinants, recommendations, measurement, interventions, prescription, levels and policy and promotion.
Syllabus:
1. Exercise and diabetes; 2. Exercise and cardiovascular disease; 3. Exercise and bone health; 4. Exercise and body weight regulation; 5. Exercise and psychological well-being; 6. Exercise and cancer; 7. The strategic case for Physical Activity; 8. Recommendations and Guidelines For Physical Activity Participation; 9. Correlates of Physical Activity; 10 Physical Activity- Levels of Activity and Measurement; 11 Physical Activity - Effective Interventions; 12 Physical Activity - Policy and Physical Activity Promotion
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On completion of this module students will be able to; 1. Describe the basic mechanisms underlying the effects of exercise on health and disease.
2. Understand and critically evaluate the state-of-the-art in different research areas of exercise and health.
3. Synthesise and convey clear guidelines for exercise to prevent and treat disease.
4. Identify and critically discuss the determinants of physical activity behaviour participation and recommendations and guidelines for physical activity participation and exercise prescription.
5. Critically evaluate variation in physical activity levels among nations and the importance of appropriate assessment techniques
6. Evaluate and discuss national and international policy statements and approaches to the promotion of physical activity
7. Enhance understanding of the state of the art in the prescription of physical activity and exercise in the maintenance of health and the prevention of chronic disease.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On completion of this module students will be able o; 1. Appreciate the relationship between physical activity and health and the responsibility of the sport and exercise scientist in this context.
2. Understand the role of the sport and exercise scientist in the prescription of physical activity and exercise in the maintenance of health and prevention of chronic disease.
Psychomotor (Physical Skills)
NA
How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module is primarily delivered by guest lecturers, who are active researchers and experts in their field. Guest lecturers will deliver research-led lectures on the state of the art in the evidence for exercise and physical activity and the prevention of chronic disease, the evidence base for physical activity recommendations and guidelines, and the appropriate exercise prescription for maintenance of health and prevention of chronic disease. Guest lectures will be supplemented in a blended learning approach by a series of online lectures. The module design will allow for the attainment of the graduate attributes.
