Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

A thorough understanding of how the human body functions underpins all subject areas in the study of Sport, Exercise Sciences. Physiology deals with the coordinated activities of cells, tissues, organs and systems. In this module students are introduced to the basics of several human physiological systems and the integration of these systems to maintain homeostasis.

Syllabus:

This module will cover material on the function of several human physiological systems including the nervous, urinary, endcrine, immune and digestive systems.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

Upon successful completion of this module students should be able to: 1. Define key concepts in human physiology. 2. Describe and illustrate key functional anatomical structures of the digestive, urinary, immune and endocrine physiological systems 3. Understand the threshold concept of homeostasis and the physiological processes which integrate to maintain homeostasis 4. Analyse and interpret human physiological data and relate to physiological processes

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

1. Value a willingness to work independently and as a member of a team. 2. Participate in class discussions with colleagues and with teachers.

Psychomotor (Physical Skills)

1. Calibrate and use laboratory equipment to collect accurate human physiological data.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

This module will be delivered primarily through lectures and will also include a laboratory component. Further breadth and deeper understanding are achieved through tutor and self directed independent learning. Upon succesful completion of this module students will have gained a knowledge of human physiology which underpins their understanding of regulation and adaptation of the human body. This knowledge is essential to the disciplines of sport and exercise science and physiotherapy and students should be able to articulate these concepts clearly. Students will be encoraged throughout the module to be proactive about their learning and faciliated in achieving this. The laboratory component of the module will require students to be actively collaborative and responsible operation of equipment and data reporting are expected.
