Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module aims to provide a detailed understanding of the coaching process, theoretical perspectives and practical coaching considerations delivered through a reflective approach to allow for students to carefully assess and refine their own coaching based on the learning.

Syllabus:

This module examines the coaching process and practice. The coaching process will be evaluated together with an examination of coaching domains and various aspects of coaching knowledge and expertise. The course is designed for students to improve their theoretical understanding of coaching with a view to improving their own practice. Indicative Curriculum: 1. The Coaching Process 2. Role of the coach 3. The Coach as an Educator 4. Coaching Philosophy 5. Coaching Styles 6. Coaching Pedagogy 7. Coach Effectiveness 8. Competency vs Expertise in Coaching 9. Professionalisation of Coaching 10. The Coach-Athlete Relationship

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the module students passing this module will be able to: • Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the Coaching Process (models 'of' and 'for' practice) • Evaluate coaching styles, beliefs and effective practices in coaching and critically reflect this against their own practice • Evaluate the links and issues between coaching theory and practice • Critically assess current models of and for the assessment of effective coaching practice and behaviour • Understand and critically evaluate various modalities of coach development identifying primary modalities for future self-development

• Appreciate and develop frameworks underpinning coaching philosophy and pedagogy to enable students to develop their own coaching philosophy • Appreciate the importance of critical factors of inter-personal relationships in coaching
