Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Maximising the technical, tactical, physical, mental and emotional development of sports competitors has become an area of significant interest and coaches must understanding the athlete to be able to enhance the development at any stage. Similarly, the development of coaches should also be understood to facilitate and maximise development of self and other coaches.
This module will be split into two distinct parts focusing on athlete and then coach development after which the connection and importance between the two are established. Within each aspect students will develop and critically analyse a number of case studies from their own and other sports. Finally the students will reflect upon their own athletes and personal stages of development to identify strategies with a view to develop a plan to enhance both.

• Critically analyse early models of athlete development and the strengths and weakness of each
• Evaluate critically recent trends in Long Term Athlete Development including the bio-psycho-social complexities of athlete development
• Compare and contrast National Governing Body talent development pathways within their own and other sports
• Identify the principles of talent identification and transfer and highlight the key considerations within their own sport
• Critical analyse the main forms of formal coach education
• Recognise the value of informal and non-formal coach development within their own coach development
• Identify the primary skills in talent identification and development with their own sport
• Develop basic skills in the facilitation of mentoring and development of a community of practice
