Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module represents the final of three modules in the professional practice theme on the programme. The goals of this module are guided by the three themes (theory-practice, stability-change, and individual-context) to create the foundation for effective, ethical and reflective practice. The teaching will enable students to engage in a variety of activities to engage, promote and refine their practitioner skills The module incorporates the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) core workshop on Reflective Practice for Sport and Exercise Scientists, for which students will receive certification from BASES and may count this towards accreditation post-graduation.
Syllabus:
The module will explore theoretical and therapeutic models, counselling skills, the practitioner-client therapeutic alliance, and reflective practice in sport, exercise and performance psychology. The BASES workshop on Professional Ethics for Sport and Exercise Scientists is embedded within the module. Module content explores how different types of knowledge can be developed through reflective practice.
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Critically evaluate a broad range of cognitive-behavioural intervention strategies used in applied psychology.
Explain and evaluate different theories underlying therapeutic interventions.
Critique new emerging developments within both theory and applied practice.
Synthesise and critique existing scientific literature and discuss the ramifications for future research in applied sport psychology.
Satisfy the learning outcomes of the BASES core workshop on Professional Ethics for Sport and Exercise Scientists.
Affective (Attitudes and Values)
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Work effectively as part of a team in problem-solving activities.
Engage in reflective practice both on an individual and group basis.
