Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Positive psychology involves the scientific study of wellbeing and optimal human functioning for individuals, groups, communities and organisations. This field of study was established in 1998 and has its roots in the humanistic tradition coupled with the concepts of flow and resilience. The module introduces and critically explores primary theories and research in positive psychology, and their inter-relationships in an applied context. Topics of interest include human strengths, virtues, authentic happiness, mental toughness, positive living skills, well-being, quality of life, flow, self-regulation, creativity, optimistic explanatory style. These are framed within contexts related to sport, exercise, and performance psychology, but are not specific to any particular context. Performance psychology has emerged as an appropriate testbed to explore positive psychology constructs in action. This module provides a road map for the implementation of both personal and group level interventions (e.g., resilience training).
Syllabus:
This module introduces intellectual history, philosophy, and theory of positive psychology. It examines concepts pertinent to a pleasant life, wellbeing and success. This includes, though not restricted to, flow, positive emotions, character strengths, mental toughness, and meaning. Concepts in positive psychology are critically evaluated and similar critical insight is applied to assessment and intervention strategies. The module explores how to apply evidence-informed positive psychology in consulting, coaching, and particularly within sport, exercise, and performance contexts.
