Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module represents the first of three modules in the professional practice theme on the programme. It serves as an introduction to the professional competencies and routes to practice in sport, exercise and performance psychology. It also requires students to think critically about the skills required as a practitioner and to reflect on their own current level of competency. The module incorporates the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) core workshop on Safeguarding Welfare in Sport and Exercise Sciences, for which students will receive certification from BASES and may count this towards accreditation post-graduation.
Syllabus:
The module will introduce routes to professional practice in sport, exercise and performance psychology in Ireland and in other countries. Competencies and skills will be critically discussed and evaluated. The BASES workshop on Safeguarding Welfare in Sport and Exercise Sciences is embedded within the module. Module content explores pragmatic concerns in sport, exercise and performance psychology, such as recognising good practice and poor practice or abuse. Professional responsibilities in safeguarding and appropriate actions are critically examined.
