Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module has been designed to give students the basic knowledge and skills needed for effective classroom language use as English language teachers introducing them to the pivotal concept of L2 teacher talk in different English language teaching educational contexts to help them prepare for their future professional needs. It is designed in particular as an alternative elective to the Teaching Practice elective in Semester Two of the MA TESOL programme for international students from non English L1 backgrounds to enable them to develop their professional English language use.
Syllabus:
Sessions focus on developing the target English knowledge and skills of students of students from non-L1 English backgrounds to respond to their future professional needs as English language teachers
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)
On completion of this module, students will have:
- developed an understanding of the nature of teacher talk and its role in the processes of second language acquisition (SLA)
- gained insight into the features of teacher talk in the contemporary L2 classroom context
- acquired a critical understanding of changing target English models and approaches in different ELT contexts and settings
- developed greater knowledge of teacher target English forms and use
-gained a critical target English awareness
- developed interactional strategies for effective target English use in the classroom

On completion of this module, students will have developed :
- enhanced socio-pragmatic and inter-personal competences
- greater inter-cultural awareness and appreciation of diversity

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
There will be a 2 hour class and a lab once a week in which students will be engaged in active learning drawing on technological tools and approaches from corpus linguistics and corpus-based research in the area of L2 classroom discourse. Students will be stimulated to become articulate, collaborative and proactive in their learning through varied tasks and activities and classroom discussions across related disciplinary fields.
