Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This module is being created as part of the Certificate in Research Skills. The certificate has been developed for PhD students and consists of six 3-ECTS modules delivered through a 1 week summer school followed by 12 weeks online delivery.
The purpose of the module is to help early researchers successfully plan and manage their research process in order to lead to excellent scholarship in their research endeavours. Researchers will develop the cognitive, metacognitive, affective and social skills required to negotiate the early stages of the research and writing process effectively. The activities will engage students in a range of strategies to develop an effective research, writing and publication strategy.
Syllabus:
This course will take early researchers through the process of planning and managing their research in order to lead to excellent scholarship in their research endeavours. Researchers will develop the cognitive, metacognitive, affective and social skills required to negotiate the early stages of the research and writing process effectively.

• initiate and develop an academic writing and research output plan;

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module is taught using a blended-delivery model. It will involve an on-campus workshop followed by a four-week online programme that will engage students in discussions, e-tivities, relevant readings and assignments. This course will take researchers through the process of planning and managing their research. It will offer practical insights into, and strategies to develop, the major factors affecting successful research in the pre-writing stages. Following the introductory course, participants will be required to initiate and develop an academic writing and research output plan for the short, medium and long term. As part of this plan, participants will consider their own writing process and will make adjustments to ineffective cognitive, metacognitive, affective and social strategies.
