Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

The purpose of the translation project is to produce an extended translation (ca. 7,000 words) from a foreign language or Gaeilge into English, or vice versa, accompanied by a commentary (8,000 words) on the translation process. It aims to develop the translation skills acquired during the course and to apply professional skills to the management of an extended translation project.

Syllabus:

The module will support students in the management and production of an extended translation of a text in a genre of their choice drawing on appropriate theories, methodologies and approaches to the translation of different text-types and genres. It will encourage them to reflect on issues such as target audience and function and to use a range of translation resources. Students will be expected to identify a source text for the project with the agreement of their supervisor and to translate into their first language. In addition, students will analyse the process of translation in a separate commentary in English.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Demonstrate advanced understanding of translation theories and concepts and professional skills in the production of an extended translation and an analytical commentary on the process of translation • Apply relevant theoretical models and strategies consistently to the analysis and practice of translation • Show advanced competence in translation project management and in the use of a variety of translation resources • Evaluate key cultural differences and the role of cultural factors in translation and more generally in intercultural communication • Produce idiomatic and functionally adequate target texts, composed in a target language that is grammatically correct, fluent, adhering to the appropriate register, and in compliance with the features of the appropriate genre and text-type

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Every student is assigned a supervisor, who will provide individualized feedback on the progress of the translation project on the basis of work submitted by the student. The supervisory meetings will involve detailed discussions between the supervisor and the student on the process of translation. Guidance will be provided regarding resources and methodologies that may be employed. This module will develop graduate attributes such as responsibility by expecting students to be proactive in managing the project and adhering to best practice in terms of ethical and professional standards. Students will also build disciplinary knowledge, independent learning and problem-solving skills by drawing on complex translation theories to address linguistic and cultural translation challenges in the practice of translation. Critical thinking skills will be encouraged through an extended, detailed commentary informed by theory to analyse the process of translation.
