Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The Translation Internship module will be of particular interest to students seeking direct experience in a professional translation environment. The module will enable students to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges of working within the translation industry, whether in an institutional or commercial setting. Students will be given support in securing a three-month internship, which can be undertaken in Ireland or abroad; the internship must be approved in advance by the Course Director. The module encourages students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier modules to professional practice during the internship and to engage in critical reflection on this process and their future role as a professional translator.
Syllabus:
Students will be introduced to a range of pre-approved internship options for which they can apply; alternatively, students can, with the approval of the Course Director, secure their own internship. Specific guidelines for students and host institutions/companies will be drawn up and agreed in advance. The placement will last three months, under the supervision of a named mentor in the workplace. Students will immerse themselves in the culture of the host institution, thus facilitating a broader awareness of professional, ethical, and commercial aspects of working in the translation industry. The host mentor will provide the Course Director with brief feedback on the student's progress after one month and submit a final report at the end of the placement period. Students will write a reflective report on their internship, bringing together theories and practices of Translation and how these have been applied within the workplace. (8,000 words).

- Apply the knowledge, skills and insights acquired in their studies on the MA in Translation to the demands of professional environments
- Demonstrate an increased understanding of linguistic and cultural translation issues and their resolution in a professional context
- Reflect on commercial and ethical considerations which also apply to professional translation practice
- Manage the learning process independently and effectively
- Produce a written evidence-based practice report/portfolio based on their internship experience

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Students apply for a 3-month internship from a range of pre-approved internship options or, with the approval of the Course Director, secure their own internship. Students will obtain 30 credits for successful completion of the internship and their written reflective report (guidelines will specify details for students and hosts). For the written report, students will reflect on how their internship experience reinforces or challenges theories and practices they have learned on the taught elements of the programme, linking this to the particular focus of their working environment. Students will be encouraged to demonstrate how their internship has facilitated the further development of key graduate attributes (being Articulate, Curious, Agile and Responsible). The report rubric for host internship supervisors will also encourage them to report on evidence of these attributes being developed by the student during the internship.
