Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Translation Practice 1 aims to equip students with an introduction to translation skills in their main working language pair. Through a series of hands-on activities in various domains of expertise, students will gain practical experience in tackling real-world translation challenges, acquiring both linguistic and cultural proficiency in their professional use of the language.
Syllabus:
For this module, students are expected to undertake translation activities and assignments in their own time under the direction of the collaborators of the module. This will be complemented with a 1-hour weekly workshop to put translation options and solutions in common and discuss the main challenges encountered and strategies applied. Students will develop basic documentation and terminology management skills, deepen their understanding of linguistic and cultural research for translation and learn to analyse differing structures between their two main languages and what this means for translation between one and the other.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of documentation and research techniques for translation.
- Analyse a source document content, identify potential translation challenges and assess the translation strategies necessary for a successful communicative reformulation of the text.
- Implement specific assignment instructions and/or style guides provided for specific assignments.
- Translate general and domain-specific material between their two primary languages and produce a 'fit-for-purpose' translation.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Complete assignments on time to a professional standard.
- Effectively interact with peers to translate documents as a group in a timely and professional manner

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module is envisioned as a project-based module that will involve face-to-face workshops and individual and group work. Through their advancement in their understanding of the linguistic and cultural implications of translation, students will become more articulate and collaborative, as well as develop their sense of responsibility towards other cultures. Furthermore, their work developing the insights necessary for a successful translation will also contribute to their becoming more inquisitive and imaginative as they reflect on and discuss different translation options and their implications.
