Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
The Translation Portfolio module aims to equip students with translation skills in either their main or their second language pair through the completion of a longer piece of work or portfolio of works in a specific area of translation of their choice. Students will apply the knowledge they are simultaneously acquiring (or acquired the year prior in the case of part-time students) in Translation Theories & Applications and Translation Practice 1 in the autumn semester to translate a 1,500-word text or series of texts and write an analytical translation commentary accompanying the translation.
This module is provided as separate from Translation Practice 1 in order to
a) provide those students who would like to develop translation skills in a second language pair to do so and
b) to foster independent translation work (private hours) and the discussion of this work among students with different language pairs as an opportunity for comparison and contrast. Unlike Translation Practice 1, students in this module will not be divided by language pairs but will rather come together in a 1-hour workshop per week to discuss their progress and challenges in their projects and establish comparisons with other languages. The language-specific component of this module will be done through two meetings with a supervisor to discuss the project.
Syllabus:
For this module, students are expected to undertake a translation project in their own time, which will be complemented with a 1-hour weekly workshop to discuss translation challenges and strategies. Students will also be required to meet with a supervisor twice in the semester to further discuss specific linguistic issues and develop their translation commentary.

- Demonstrate and apply knowledge of at least one approach to the analysis and practice of translation.
- Produce a 'fit-for-purpose' translation of a text in a specific area of specialization in translation.
- Carry out appropriate research to evaluate documentation sources for specific translation needs.
- Review and evaluate their own work according to professional quality standards.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
This module is envisioned as a project-based module where students will develop their independence as translators through the focus on a specific project of their choice. By doing this, students will be encouraged to become curious problem-solvers as well as enterprising and resilient. This module will involve workshops as well as individual and group work. The student-led workshops will serve as an opportunity for students to develop their inter- and intra-personal skills, whereas their individual work with a supervisor will contribute to their becoming professionally responsible and responsive.
