Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
This second advanced tax module aims to build on students' prior knowledge of Irish capital taxes by addressing more advanced technical issues within the domains of Irish Capital Gains Tax, Capital Acquisitions Tax and Stamp duty. The module aims to give students an in-depth knowledge of and the competence to apply various advanced aspects of the Irish Capital Gains Tax, Capital Acquisitions Tax and Stamp Duty rules, equipping students with an essential skill set and knowledge base to use in the workplace.
Syllabus:
The students will develop an appreciation and in-depth understanding of the legislation, procedure and practice governing the most common aspects of Capital Gains Tax (CGT), Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) and Stamp Duty including the following: appreciate the impact of residence on the charge to CGT and CAT and apply the relevant rules to determine the charge to tax; apply the appropriate tax reliefs and exemptions to advanced CGT, CAT and stamp duty calculations to determine the correct tax liability in each case; compute the CGT liability on the disposal of shares; apply the general principles for the administration and payment of Irish CGT, CAT and stamp duty.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an ability to discuss and apply tax residence rules for Irish CGT, CAT and Stamp Duty
2. Display the communication skills required to explain the complex rules regarding the administration and computation of Irish CGT, CAT and Stamp Duty, including assessing eligibility for and applying a range of reliefs and exemptions.
3. Exhibit the competence to compute how these three capital taxes interact with each other in complex transactions involving multiple taxpayers.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an appreciation of the interaction of Irish capital taxes in various scenarios and the implications arising therefrom.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
The Module will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and guest speakers through which the student will acquire the technical skills and knowledge required to deal with routine issues in CGT, CAT and Stamp Duty. This module will prioritise the graduate attributes of being 'curious' and 'articulate' by providing students with opportunities to discuss and engage with complex real-tax taxation challenges.
