Rationale and Purpose of the Module:
Regardless of whether a job title contains the word 'writer', the ability to write well is essential. Much of our workday is occupied by writing / reading; this increases with seniority. As writing skills are essential in many corporate professions, this module will be suitable for a wide range of disciplines. From reports, proposals, web content, emails, memos, subtitles, video scripts, labels on graphics, and social media posts, the ability to write well underlies many forms of communication. Employers consistently seek graduates with excellent communication skills. The ability to communicate inherently challenging content in an easy-to-digest way is a valuable skill. Knowing how to produce content that is easy to read cannot be underestimated.
N.B. This module must be assigned a TW or EL prefix.
Syllabus:
The module focuses on professional writing. It covers: an introduction to professional writing and communication (importance of good communication, examples of poor communication, principles of effective communication); writing style for professional communication (theories, principles, guidelines on a professional writing style); plain language principles (guidelines); genres (for example, reports, manuals, proposals); audience (analysis, design decisions); and purpose.

• Write clear, correct, concise, and persuasive professional communications.
• Identify and write in an appropriate style for the content's purpose, genre, and audience.
• Communicate complex information efficiently and effectively.
• Evaluate and revise samples of their own professional writing.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Demonstrate an appreciation of the value of careful and considered professional writing by reflecting on their own workplace writing.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:
Writing for the workplace will be delivered entirely through the UL-supported Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The module will be taught in one six-week online block, followed by an assignment week. The module will run in the Autumn semester. Each week, students will review asynchronous online lecture recordings and other learning resources, and participate in online activities/ e-tivities to keep them engaged. The course content will reflect best practice in the subject area. In lectures, students will develop their understanding of written communication skills (knowledgeable) and their ability to communicate complex ideas in direct language to diverse audiences (strong inter-personal skills and empathetic). Assignments will replicate real-world practice, requiring students to demonstrate their written communication skills (problem-solver), and to reflect on their professional development (independent and adaptive). Students will take this module in conjunction with one of the UL@Work professional diplomas.(Graduate attributes are in brackets).
